Wearing a Dress Shirt without a Tie

Wearing dress shirts without a tie may be a cool, relaxed look for Hollywood celebrities, but what about for the rest of us? How do you pull off the look? Below are some details to point you in the right direction.

Is It a Dress Shirt or Sport Shirt?
One of the easiest ways to determine whether or not a shirt is actually a dress shirt is to check the sizing of the neck. Exact sized shirts are dress shirts; shirts sized small, medium, etc. are likely sport shirts.

Styles of Shirt
Out of all the styles of dress shirts, only tab collar shirts are unacceptable without ties. The tab is included specifically to button underneath and straighten the knot of a a tie. Leaving an unbuttoned tab hanging off the collar area of the shirt looks incomplete, so save tab collar shirts for use only with ties.

What Can Work
Button-down shirts work especially well for casual attire. The style of the collar makes them more casual and the visual created by an open collared shirt with a button-down collar just works. It's no accident that so many casual sport shirts feature a button-down collar design.

Either point collar or spread collar shirts can also be worn without a tie, but it is important to take a hard look at yourself in either style of shirt. Some men just don't feel right in a dress shirt without a tie, and if you don't feel comfortable, you simply won't look comfortable either. So choose the look that feels right for you.
