How to Store Your Coat?

When the days warm up, it's time to start thinking about storing your heavy topcoats away until next winter. There is no real trick here. Just follow a few simple rules and your coat will emerge next fall looking just the way it did when you stored it.

1) Keep It Clean
A trip to the dry cleaners ensures that any stains are removed before they become permanent. It also means that moths and other fabric-devouring insects will be less attracted to your coat.

2) Use the Right Hanger
Select a broad, sturdy hanger that's up to the job. A proper coat hanger will help maintain the shape of your coat's shoulders, unlike a wire hanger that could leave divots. A cedar coat hanger or cedar block dangling from the neck of the hanger also gives bugs less incentive to munch on your coat.

3) Let It Breathe
Storing your coat in dry cleaning plastic, or inside a plastic garment bag, could make your coat smell a bit stale when you get it out next fall. Also, certain plastics can have a chemical reaction that may discolor materials or plastic buttons. Choose a cloth garment bag instead, or simply use a plastic shoulder guard to prevent dust from settling.

4) Avoid the Light
Any garment that's in long-term storage could fade with only a little bit of light exposure, so be sure to choose a darkened closet.
