Why are Pockets Sewn Shut?

You know the dilemma: You get your new jacket or coat home only to discover that the pockets are sewn shut. It might make you wonder if you're supposed to use these pockets? We reveal the answers below.

Why are pockets sewn shut?
Many pockets are routinely sealed prior to shipment from the manufacturer. Its done to facilitate the easiest pressing possible on the finished coat, as well as keep the jacket looking its best when it's on display in the store. It also discourages customers from putting their hands in the pockets when they try on the garment which prevents damage.

Should you open them?
First and foremost, pockets are functional. And leaving them sealed shut is like keeping plastic on a new sofa when actually the plastic just protects the sofa until it's purchased. It's exactly the same concept with pockets that are sewn shut. So yes, you should definitely open them.

Generally, the pockets of suit jackets and sport coats are intended to carry discreet, non-bulky cargo. You know, a pocket square, a passport or a movie ticket, not the paperback youe currently reading or a bunch of pens. Storing anything too heavy in a suit or coat pocket will distort the shape over time, causing a droop around the pockets.

What's the best way to open them?
Ideally, you get the nice folks at Mens Wearhouse to help you out before you leave the store. But if youve made it home and your pockets are still sewn shut, you can proceed carefully with a specialized device called a seam ripper (available at any sewing store), or just go slowly with a pair of nail scissors. Snip each thread carefully to avoid any damage to the surrounding material. And if you really dont trust yourself, your neighborhood tailor or dry cleaner should be able to help you out.
